I served 42 years in the merchant navy (merchant marine), trained in New Zealand and British ships, and served in a variety of ships from 3rd mate to captain. I retired 6 years ago. My sailing skills are self-taught, and I acknowledge that, while an expert at sea, I am still very much a learner of sailing skills.
My other main passion is walking in the outdoors, and just returned from Argentina with one of my sons, where we climbed a number of non-technical peaks.
I have a laid back and generally accommodating attitude, and I have been told that I'm a patient and effective instructor.

  • Boat descriptionBasically Oceaneer is fitted out for living on board. Five headsails including two furlers, and a main which can be triple-reefed. Cutter rig. 27 HP Yanmar diesel engine. Starting and house batteries all charged from both the solar panels and the alternator. VHF radio, EPIRB, 2 PLBs, 2 life buoys, 5 life jackets, 2 fire extinguishers, gas detector, bilge pump. Lifelines and guard rails on deck. 2 safety harnesses. 3 metre inflatable tender. Chart plotter, autopilot, receptacles for charging devices. Inverter and battery-operated power tools. She is quite comfortable and has a good turn of speed in light conditions. She sails best and fastest when kept reasonably upright, meaning reducing sail can result in an increase of speed! Manoeuvrability is good. The galley is equipped with two gas rings and an oven, fridge, underdeck freezer, sink, and plenty of storage. I like to eat well, and healthily. I'm open to ideas about cuisine, and enjoy a good variety. I have 2 fishing rods to supplement the food supply, but acknowledge that fishing is violent and am negotiable about this.

4 days in Abel Tasman NP

Fortunate to have the chance to crew on Brian's boat. He's a patient skipper and happy to teach. Spent 3 nights on the Oceaneer touring the Park, learnt plenty and had a great time and with good chats. I would crew again and I can recommend :-)

Amazing time on Oceaneer 2!

5

Went on a 5 day cruise with Brian on the Oceaneer 2, had we had an absolutely amazing time! This was our first time sailing, and Brian was a patient and skilled instructor. He uses a hands on approach and gave us plenty of opportunity to learn. The sailing yacht is relatively spacious and easy to move around. I will never forget my time spent on Oceaneer 2. Thanks so much Brian :)
