Looking for Crew position sailing the South Pacific 2025
Hey Captains,
I’m hoping to find a sail boat in need of crew crossing the South Pacific in 2025. I have previous sailing experience crossing oceans and cruising. More than happy to contribute with my own expenses and help in whatever areas of sailing/ boat life required.
Sailing experience:
2014 - Australia > Indonesia > Malaysia > Thailand
2016/ 17 - Sailed the Atlantic - UK > Canary Islands > Antigua > Panama
2017 - Through the Panama Canal and north to San Diego, US
2017 - San Diego > Hawaii > LA
2017 - Costa Rica > Enseñada, Mexico - First Mate
2018 - US > Japan - Pacific crossing - Watch Leader
2018 - Japan > Hawaii - ‘THE SWIM’ Expedition - 165 days at sea - First Mate/ Research manager
2018 - Hawaii > San Francisco - ‘The Vortex Swim’ Expedition - 80 days at sea - First Mate/ Expedition Leader
I am trying to complete a circumnavigation of the world without flying. Sailing the South Pacific back to Australia is my final leg to complete a full lap (big exhale). It has been a 10+ year adventure that I am ready to close the door on. I first sailed out of Australia in 2014 towards Indonesia, I spent about 6 months sailing through Indonesia, Malaysia and then Thailand on 3 different boats before I began traveling overland towards Europe. Late 2016, I joined another boat (Challenge 67) in the UK which had been recently purchased to become the support vessel for a guy (Ben Lecomte) who had plans to swim the Pacific Ocean. I helped with the delivery of the boat from the UK to San Diego, USA. By that time I was all in on helping with Ben’s Pacific swim plans. As a volunteer, I helped with a full refit of the boat in LA - we had to make her expedition ready for us to survive in the ocean for 6+months. In 2018 we were ready (mostly) and sailed to Japan to begin the expedition. Ben swum 15,000nm but ultimately the weather beat us. After 165 days at sea we retreated to Hawaii when damage to our equipment caused us to abandoned the world record attempt.
In Hawaii, we repaired the boat and built a new expedition - ‘The Vortex Swim’. Moved by the experience on the first expedition with he amount of plastic we encountered, we decided to sail through the heart of the highest concentration of ocean plastic in the world, ‘the great pacific garbage patch’ between Hawaii and mainland USA. Ben swum through the centre to raise awareness on the issue. We finished in San Francisco with Ben swimming under the Golden Gate Bridge. If you google Ben Lecomte / the swim / the vortex swim you should be able to find some articles on the expeditions. There are also a few YouTube videos.
For the last few years, together with my partner (Hannah, 33F), we have been living in Seattle, both working for the production company (Nomadica Films) that filmed a documentary about Ben’s swim (we can help with youtube channels/ social media if thats something you are into). We were hoping to save enough money to buy our own boat to sail home but for various reasons we are now thinking that it would be best to crew with someone else instead. So if anyone is in need of crew headed in the direction of Australia I would be very interested in talking. Hannah also has some sailing experience (she crewed on the expedition through the garbage patch with me) and is keen on joining for the sail home if we find the right boat. Our ideal scenario would be finding a boat looking for a couple however, I am considering all potential options (solo or couple) as getting home next year is my priority.
I am well familiar with life at sea and long passages. Plenty of experience sailing through challenging conditions with grueling rotations. Down to help with all aspects of sailing and always willing to learn more. I’ve crewed with a multitude of crews from all walks of life, I’m confident I can get along with pretty much anyone. I would consider myself a pretty chill easy going aussie bloke. I understand your boat is your home and I will always respect that.
Please reach out if you have any questions. Thanks for the time to read this far, looking forward to hearing from you. All the best,
Ty
