Chesapeake to Hamburg Germany
I am taking my Baltic 38DP to Hamburg Germany with a desired departure on or before the end of June and am looking for two crew members to join us. My one other crew member is finishing the last 600 nm east of Bermuda to complete a circumnavigation and has 50,000 nm to date. He may join the boat in Bermuda or depart the Annapolis area depending upon the weather timeline.
With four onboard the watches and sleep will be more manageable. Our route will be from the Annapolis area south to Hampton Roads and then east to Bermuda. Crew can meet me in Annapolis where I can pick them up at BWI in Baltimore. I can also pick up added crew along the route prior to departing the Chesapeake but won’t have ground transportation after I leave Annapolis.
From Bermuda we’ll wait for a weather window as appropriate before making for the Azores. It is roughly 670 nm to Bermuda once we enter the Atlantic to Bermuda and then roughly 2000 nm to The Azores. Classic formula hull speed is 7.5 knots but Sailboat guide publishes a model specific hull speed of 8.9 knots.
There is the option to debark in the Azores as I have friends that are willing to join us in the Azores. If circumstances or an emergency arises then we will certainly adjust. To be fair we should agree to our plan upfront.
From the Azores it is roughly 1900 nm to Hamburg but there are numerous potential intermediate ports from mainland Portugal to Denmark. Crew swaps could occur along this leg if necessary or.desired. There are of course prerequisites for each port of entry that need to be arranged.
I will cover expenses onboard and for the vessel but each of us will cover our expenses ashore. Transportation to and from is each person’s responsibility.
I will be traveling out to prep the boat in April. It is currently in a wet slip until 30 April. I have a reservation to haul and paint the hull the beginning of May. I will have the boat surveyed/assessed to address any identified items including the rigging. I will be staying onboard while I prep the boat and install added systems including solar panels. If crew wish to arrive early and stay aboard that is an option we can arrange.
There is some extra personal gear and plenty of basic bedding onboard, but we need to ensure everyone is properly equipped for their safety and comfort.
The goal is foremost to be safe and enjoy the passage. We are looking for people willing to work together, and readily pitch in with the sailing as well as the necessities of life onboard. Ocean passage experience and an easy going personality is a plus. The boat is non-smoking. We will review the boat’s systems and rigging prior to departure so everyone is comfortable. Sailing down the Chesapeake will give everyone a chance to familiarize themselves with the operation of the boat underway and its systems before heading out to sea.
We will coordinate to accommodate meal preferences.
Thank you,
Dave M
Good company
I really enjoyed this adventure. I helped David get his sailboat through New York City and across the bay to Atlantic Highlands. David is a good communicator and easy to work with.
