Opportunities aboard a catamaran (Next: Caribbean exploring then help us decide where next!)
?️CARIBBEAN EXPLORING NOW / MORE ADVENTURES MAY-NOV / CITIZEN SCIENCE
We’re on a multi-year sailing trip, have just finished exploring some of French Guiana, Suriname and Guyana after our Atlantic crossing and landed in the Caribbean. Now thinking about the next leg of our journey and comparing a few different options - maybe you can help us decide and join for part of the expedition!
For April and some of May we’ll be exploring the Caribbean (and will have some space opening up soon if you’d like to join for that), then need to make a decision about where to go next. Which one we select will depend on where our future crew members (YOU?) want to go and how much budget we have available as a group to do it - this is a collaborative project after all!
April and May could include some of Trinidad, Grenada, St Lucia, Guadeloupe, Dominica, Martinique, Antigua, St Martin and BVI
There are 5 main options for what we do May-Nov - with some sub-options in the mix too - let me know which one(s) you’re down for, and then you can ask to join for some or all of that period:
_______ OPTION 1️⃣ ______
1: TO GRENADA, TOBAGO AND TRINIDAD May-Nov
Traveling back south through the Caribbean in May for in-depth exploration of southern Grenada??, Tobago?? and Trinidad?? in May-Nov, keeping south of the hurricane zone that is the rest of the Caribbean during this period
_______ OPTION 2️⃣ _______
2. TO CENTRAL AMERICA
From Dominican Republic ?? to Panama ?? via Jamaica?? (May) and exploring Panama/Costa Rica/Colombia ??????(May-Nov)
_______ OPTION 3️⃣ ______
3: TO CENTRAL AMERICA AND THROUGH THE PACIFIC TO NEW ZEALAND
From Dominican Republic ?? to Panama ?? via Jamaica?? (April), through the Panama Canal across the Pacific (possibly stopping to explore the Galapagos??) through French Polynesia????, the Cook Islands??, Niue?? and Tonga?? arriving in New Zealand?? in November
(If we don’t do it this year, option 3 is shaping up to be the likely favorite next year, so get in touch even if it won’t work for you this year)
_______ OPTION 4️⃣ ______
BACK TO EUROPE…BACK TO CARIBBEAN
4: Leave Caribbean early- to mid-May for the Azores??, Mainland Portugal, Madeira, Canaries??, Cape Verde??, Senegal??, Gambia??, Fernando de Noronha (Brasil) ?? and back to the Caribbean ?️in December
_______ OPTION 5️⃣ ______
5A: CARIBBEAN TO CANADA + 5B: CANADA TO EUROPE (AZORES) OR 5C: CANADA to CARIBBEAN
5A. Leaving Caribbean ?️early- to mid-May with a possible stop in Bermuda?? to Halifax, Nova Scotia?? and the Canadian East Coast
5B. Leaving Nova Scotia in May, June or July for the Azores ?? - and the rest could be similar to 4 above
5C. Nova Scotia to the Caribbean ?️ leaving late November
WHAT ELSE HAPPENS ABOARD
??As lovers of both the ocean and science, we also want our project to run, participate and collaborate on ocean citizen science projects as the boat moves around the world. We’re working with scientists from the University of Cambridge ???????, University of St Andrews ???????, and other universities and institutions globally.
????️?️ A current focus is development of a more affordable hydrophone to listen to, record and process whale vocalisations, and help distribute these to ocean-going boats everywhere ⛵️to monitor cetacean populations and behaviour at scale.
?? For those that work remotely, during some parts of the trip it may be possible to continue doing that remote work aboard in some capacity (via satellite internet) - let’s discuss if that applies to you
Every so often, we host special sailing weeks: invite carefully selected people who are world class in their respective fields but also kind/respectful/fun, pull them away from their busy day-to-day a week of discussion/relaxation/exploration/food (The selection process for guests for these weeks involves a committee made up of previous participants). Everyone gets a dedicated hour of time during the week to lead the discussion - participants normally use that to help solve whatever the biggest issue is in life, whether personal, career, business or otherwise - and then have a bunch of diverse wise-heads talk through it with them - getting to that level of depth really seems to develop a strong bond, and often the discussions continue ad hoc later through the week, while lazing on trampoline out front of the cat or during dinner
?✈️THE SKIPPER
Doug is from New Zealand, a former corporate lawyer and now founder of a fully-remote travel gear company. Loves sailing, surfing, being underwater, gathering food from the wilderness, onboard karaoke, comedy and travel. He speaks passable English and tiny amounts of Portuguese, Spanish, Māori and Japanese
⛵️THE BOAT
She’s a comfortable Lagoon 380 S2 catamaran, with four double cabins, over 1000W of solar, Lithium battery, watermaker, 2400W inverter to run 230V appliances including a cooker, Iridium Go! and Starlink unit (+ one spare) for emergency communication. Doug’s skippered her for over 17,000 nautical miles through Europe, South America, the Caribbean and across the Atlantic three times over the last 6 years
Send me a message if you’re interested in joining for Caribbean exploring in April and May, and/or your thoughts on where we should go next if you want to join for some of May-November!
(Shared cost basis - those coming aboard don’t pay for accommodation or maintenance and make a financial contribution only towards the direct costs of the trip - including our citizen science efforts - so as you can imagine sometimes I’m overwhelmed with messages, please be patient for a response?)
